Top Issues

Below represent the issues people in IL State District 21 mentioned to me while door knocking for signatures.

Take a moment to learn how I would help improve each issue.

Property Taxes

Homeowners in our district are being squeezed by some of the highest property taxes in the nation — while schools and local services still struggle. The system is broken because the state hasn’t kept its promises to fund education and infrastructure. It’s time for fairness and transparency, so families can stay in the neighborhoods they love.

Priorities:

  • Shift the burden away from homeowners by increasing the state’s share of school funding.

  • Cap runaway assessments that price seniors and middle-class families out of their homes.

  • Audit local taxing bodies to eliminate waste, duplication, and outdated levies.

  • Reward local governments that collaborate or consolidate services to save taxpayers money.

Creative Ideas:

  • 💡 “Tax Transparency Dashboard”: An easy-to-read online portal showing how every local dollar is spent — so taxpayers can actually see where their money goes.

  • 🏘 “Stay Home” Program: Property tax relief credits for long-term residents who’ve lived in their homes 20+ years.

  • 🗳 “Budget Town Nights”: Annual open forums where residents can weigh in on local tax priorities before budgets are finalized.

Health Care

Health care isn’t a privilege — it’s a basic right. Families shouldn’t have to choose between prescriptions and rent. We need affordable coverage, better access to care close to home, and a focus on prevention — not just treatment after people are already sick.

Priorities:

  • Protect and expand Medicaid, especially for children, seniors, and low-income families.

  • Support mental health services and substance abuse programs in schools and communities.

  • Make prescription drugs more affordable through state-negotiated bulk purchasing.

  • Expand telehealth options for rural and working families who can’t always get to appointments.

Creative Ideas:

  • 🚑 “Neighborhood Care Vans”: Mobile clinics offering free screenings, vaccinations, and health education in parks and community centers.

  • 🧘 “Healthy Habits Grant”: Micro-grants for schools and local nonprofits promoting nutrition, exercise, and mindfulness.

  • 🩺 “One Stop Health Hub” App: A state-backed platform connecting residents with affordable clinics, insurance options, and preventive care resources.

Jobs

Working people built Illinois — and they deserve a fair return for their work. We can grow our economy by investing in small businesses, supporting organized labor, and creating pathways to good-paying local jobs that don’t require leaving the state.

Priorities:

  • Support apprenticeships and trade programs that lead directly to stable careers.

  • Attract new industries in clean energy, logistics, and advanced manufacturing to District 21.

  • Protect workers’ rights to organize and earn fair wages and benefits.

  • Provide small business relief through simplified taxes, micro-loans, and local procurement preferences.

Creative Ideas:

  • ⚙️ “Made in 21” Local Business Initiative: A district-wide campaign to promote products and services created right here — keeping money in the community.

  • 👷 “Build the Future” Apprenticeship Fair: A collaboration with unions and schools to connect young people with career training.

  • 🧾 “Small Biz Simplify” Act: A proposal to merge redundant state and local forms into a single streamlined business registration process.

Education

Every child in Illinois deserves a quality education no matter their ZIP code. Our public schools should be places where kids feel supported, teachers feel respected, and parents feel empowered — not overtaxed. We can make smarter investments, cut bureaucracy, and keep dollars where they belong: in the classroom.

Priorities:

  • Fully fund public schools so teachers can focus on teaching, not buying supplies out of pocket.

  • Reform property-tax dependence by pursuing a fairer statewide funding formula that reduces the burden on working families.

  • Expand career and technical programs in high schools and community colleges to prepare students for good-paying local jobs.

  • Support mental health resources for students and staff, not just test prep and paperwork.

Creative Ideas:

  • 🚌 "Career Bus" Program: Partner with local trade unions, businesses, and colleges to send mobile career labs to schools — students can explore real-world jobs hands-on.

  • 🎓 “Teach Local” Initiative: Offer incentives for local graduates to become educators and serve their hometown districts.

  • 📱 Parent Partnership App: Create a state-supported platform that connects parents, teachers, and local school boards to increase transparency and community input.

Immigration

Illinois thrives because of its diversity. Immigrants are part of our schools, our small businesses, our churches, and our neighborhoods. We should focus on welcoming, integrating, and protecting families — while ensuring local governments have the tools to manage growth fairly and safely.

Priorities:

  • Protect immigrant families from discrimination and ensure fair treatment under state law.

  • Support English language learning (ELL) programs in schools and adult education centers.

  • Streamline licensing and certification for immigrants with professional skills to enter the workforce faster.

  • Promote safe, legal pathways to residency for families working and contributing to our communities.

Creative Ideas:

  • 🤝 “Community Bridge Nights”: Monthly events co-hosted by local schools, police, and nonprofits to connect immigrant families with local services and civic education.

  • 🧾 Fast-Track Licensing Task Force: A state team to evaluate credentials from other countries so nurses, engineers, and tradespeople can start working in Illinois more quickly.

  • 🍲 “Taste of District 21” Festival: Celebrate the cultures of our district with food, music, and small business vendors — while highlighting immigrant-owned enterprises.

Public Safety

Core Message:

Public safety isn’t about fear — it’s about trust. We can reduce crime and violence by investing in community relationships, smart policing, and prevention. Safe neighborhoods start with opportunity, not just enforcement.

Priorities:

  • Support local police and first responders with modern training and mental health resources.

  • Invest in youth programs that give kids purpose and direction before crime becomes an option.

  • Promote community policing to build trust between residents and officers.

  • Tackle gun violence with stronger enforcement against illegal weapons, not lawful owners.

Creative Ideas:

  • 🚲 “Walk and Talk Wednesdays”: Monthly community patrol walks where residents and police officers talk informally about safety issues.

  • 🎯 “Second Chance Workforce Program”: Partner with local employers to provide job training for nonviolent offenders reentering society.

  • 🏀 Youth Safety Nights: Combine sports, mentorship, and guest speakers — hosted in park districts — to build stronger bonds between youth, parents, and police.
